Your measurements

How to measure yourself correctly
  1. Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, with the tape level across your back.
  2. Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Breathe out normally.
  3. Hips: Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and seat.
  4. Shoulders: Measure around both shoulders at their widest point, with your arms relaxed.

Your measurements stay on your device and are never saved. Every body is different, so use these results as a styling guide, not a rule.

What Is a Body Shape Calculator?

A body shape calculator compares your three key measurements (bust, waist and hips) and shows how they relate to each other. The result is not about your size or weight. It describes your proportions: where your body is widest, how defined your waist is, and whether your upper and lower body are balanced.

Knowing your shape makes shopping much easier. Instead of guessing, you know which necklines, waistlines and cuts will flatter you. You can skip the pieces that will never sit right, however good they look on the hanger.

The 5 Body Shapes Explained

1. Hourglass

Your bust and hips are almost the same size, and your waist is clearly narrower, usually 9 inches (23 cm) or more smaller. Curves are balanced top and bottom. Style rule: keep your waist visible. Wrap dresses, belted coats and high-waisted jeans are your best friends. See our outfit ideas for hourglass shape for full looks.

2. Pear (Triangle)

Your hips are wider than your bust by roughly 3.6 inches (9 cm) or more. Shoulders are often narrower, and the waist is defined. Style rule: draw the eye upward. Use boat necks, statement sleeves and bright tops, with dark, streamlined bootcut or wide-leg bottoms.

3. Apple (Round)

Your waist measurement is close to, or larger than, your bust and hips. Weight tends to sit around the middle, while legs and arms are often slimmer. Style rule: create long vertical lines. Choose V-necks, empire waists, open long layers and straight-leg trousers. Our apple shape outfit guide has 19 ideas to try.

4. Rectangle (Straight)

Your bust, waist and hips are within a few inches of each other, giving you a straight, athletic frame. Style rule: either create curves with peplums, belts and ruffles, or lean into it with sleek, minimal tailoring.

5. Inverted Triangle

Your shoulders and bust are wider than your hips by 3.6 inches (9 cm) or more. Many swimmers and athletes have this shape. Style rule: balance your frame by adding volume below the waist. Wear A-line skirts, wide-leg trousers and prints on the bottom half, and keep tops simple with V-necks.

How the Calculator Works

The tool compares three differences: hips minus bust (is your lower or upper body wider?), bust minus waist and hips minus waist (how defined is your waist?). For example, a difference of less than 3.6 inches between bust and hips, combined with a waist at least 9 inches smaller, means hourglass. Shoulder measurement is optional. It helps tell a rectangle apart from an inverted triangle or pear when your bust and hips are close.

Some results also show a variant, such as Top hourglass, Bottom hourglass or Curvy pear (spoon). These sit between two main shapes, so the styling tips from both will usually work for you.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Use a soft tape measure and wear a non-padded bra or light clothing.
  • Stand straight and relaxed in front of a mirror, so you can check the tape stays level all the way around.
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger underneath.
  • Measure your waist after breathing out normally. Don’t suck in.
  • Measure twice. If the numbers differ, use the average.

Body Shape vs. Body Size

Shape and size are two different things. A size 4 and a size 20 can both be hourglass, and two people of the same size can have completely different shapes. That’s why the same dress can look amazing on one friend and wrong on another. Shape is about proportion, so the styling rules on this page work at every size. Your shape can also change over time, after pregnancy, with weight changes, with strength training or with age. It’s worth measuring again every year or two, especially before you invest in tailored pieces.

Body Shape Calculator FAQs

How do I know my body shape without measuring?

Stand in front of a mirror in fitted clothing and compare the width of your shoulders, waist and hips. If your hips are the widest point, you’re likely a pear. If your shoulders are, you’re likely an inverted triangle. If your waist is clearly narrowest with balanced top and bottom, you’re likely an hourglass. Measuring is still more accurate.

What is the most common female body shape?

Studies of body measurements generally find that rectangle is the most common female body shape, followed by pear and apple. A true balanced hourglass is less common than most people think.

Can my body shape change?

Yes. Weight gain or loss, pregnancy, menopause and strength training can all change where your body carries volume. Your bone structure, such as shoulder and hip width, stays the same, so the change is usually gradual.

Does this body shape calculator work for men?

The calculator and styling tips are designed for women’s proportions. Men’s body types are usually described differently, for example trapezoid, triangle and oval, and are based more on chest and shoulder width.

Are my measurements saved anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your measurements are never sent to our server or stored.
